Myth:  You have to know a foreign language to go abroad.

Fact:  Programs are available all over the world with courses taught in English.  Studying abroad is a great way to learn how to speak another language, but foreign language skills are not a requirement!

Myth:  Studying abroad is too expensive.

Fact:  Studying abroad does not have to break the bank!  Many students are able to go abroad with no added financial strain.  This is because SVSU students are able to use all of their current SVSU financial aid and scholarship money toward a study abroad program.  Thousands of dollars in scholarship (at SVSU alone) are available to help support study abroad programs as well!

Myth:  There are no study abroad programs for my major.

Fact:  SVSU offers study abroad programs for EVERY major offered on campus.  You can take general education credits abroad, too!

Myth:  You will be alone when you go abroad.

Fact:  The majority of study abroad programs are group oriented.  In most cases, students are with other SVSU students and/or other American students on their study abroad program.

Myth:  You have to be gone for a full semester.

Fact:  SVSU offers programs that are as few as 1-2 weeks!  If you can't be gone for a long time, consider a faculty-led program over winter/spring break or during the summer!  Programs range in length from 1-6 weeks over the summer up to a full semester or full academic year.

Myth:  Studying abroad will delay graduation.

Fact:  SVSU guarantees that students will recieve SVSU credit as part of any study abroad program.  Study abroad advisors are available to work with students to find the classes they need to complete for their major or for general educaiton requirements.
